Dear Colleagues:
It's that time of year again: new birth, new beginnings, new promises,
new hopes...and making those New Year's resolutions. I'm sure that we
have all made our share of resolutions, and have fallen short. Probably
some of you have even resolved to NOT make a resolution! Let's change
the lingo/syntax... Let's call it our new year's "challenge"!!
My challenge to each of you is to introduce your love of organ music and the organ to one person a student? an adult? each month. One person a month is do-able. That means YOU will introduce 12 people to the organ over the course of the year. Multiply that times 250 chapter members and the effect is a WOW!
Okay, let's get started...don't procrastinate, dilly-dally, put off,
delay... Contact a young person today and invite
them to our I
Pipe
Organ Discovery, January 26, 2008. There's an on-line registration form
at our website (www.kcago.com), or call Jan Van Otterloo (816.322.4942)
if you prefer to register over the phone. There's also I*POD flyers available
here that you can download/print and hand out.
Maybe your interested young person would enjoy bringing a friend along
for company! The MORE, the MERRIER!
Soli Deo Gloria!
Sharon L. Hettinger, Dean
Our I-love-POD event is just around the corner (January 26, 2008). This is a wonderful opportunity for our chapter to introduce the pipe organ to a large number of young people — we are hoping for 100 attendees! The most important thing that you can do right now to make this event a success is to encourage young musicians to register and attend.
Although letters and flyers were sent to over 200 piano teachers in the greater Kansas City area and to all school districts, we have only 16 young people registered as of December 20.
If you teach piano, please encourage all of your students to come - remind them about free gifts and free pizza!
Jan Van Otterloo and Ted Stewart will be demonstrating at Faith Lutheran; Ken Walker will demonstrate at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal; and Stephanie Henry will demonstrate at Southminster Presbyterian. The Marionettes will present "Bach Comes to Visit" for the two younger groups.
Please contact Jan Van Otterloo (816-322-4942 or vanhumphreyloo@aol.com) if you can assist or if you have any questions.
MAKE THIS YOUR NEW YEAR's CHALLENGE: INTRODUCE A STUDENT
to the ORGAN!
CONTACT JEAN LYNE at 816.452.8222 by Wednesday, 23 January 2008, if you
will attend the PIPE ORGAN DISCOVERY on January 26, so we will have pizza
enough for all!
"Christmas Services" (Kansas City (Mo.) Times, 24 December 1889, page 8)
At the Christmas services at St. John's Roman Catholic church on Independence avenue mass will be sung at 5 o'clock and at 10:30 o'clock solemn high mass will be sung. The choir will render Eduardo Marzo's "Messe Sole[m]nelle," at the offertory the "Adeste Fidelio," arranged by J. V. Novello, will be sung. The choir consists of the following singers: Sopranos, Misses Janie Harwood, Etta Maloney and Lavinia Winchester; altos, Misses Blanche McDonald and Lavinia Harwood; tenors, Messrs. George Meuehlebach and A. J. O'Neil; bassos, Messrs. J. W. Perry and J. Welkspein; organist, Mrs. Teresa Lawlor."
[NOTE: The Church of Saint John the Baptist (Roman Catholic), was a predominantly Irish parish founded in 1882 on the north side of Independence Avenue, west of Highland Avenue. Even during its early years, this church was said to have one of the best choirs in the city and its music program in general was highly regarded. Saint John's was also the first Roman Catholic parish in Kansas City to acquire a pipe organ. Mrs. Teresa (Galvis) Lawlor, organist at Saint John's Church from 1889 to 1891, was born in Auburn, New York, in 1861. From 1891 to 1894, she was organist of Saint Patrick's Church (Roman Catholic). In January 1895, Mrs. Lawlor married Robert R. Keith, a prominent Kansas City businessman and founder of a furniture company. She died in August 1939.]

Long Range Planning: Betty Bauer reported that, prior to this
Board meeting, 6 of the 9 members of the committee plus Professional Concerns

of revising the InfoPak. They hope to have a new edition completed by
the end of the current school year.
Dean Sharon Hettinger is pleased to announce that Past-Dean Nan Hulett has graciously agreed to serve as hospitality chair for the remainder of the year.
