Dear Colleagues:
Welcome to the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Guild of
Organists! Last season we experienced a delightful array of
programming: from recitals to an organ tour in Atchison
to Schola Cantorum concerts to Bachathon. Thank you, Dean Nan Hulett and
your program committee, for opening our eyes and ears to new possibilities.
As your new Dean, I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities
the Guild has to offer. The program committee who have worked closely
with me over the past year in preparation for this season are Mark Langdon,
Norm Kinnaugh, Ann Marie Rigler, Tom Atkin, and John Schaefer. We have
a great year lined up for you--with artists "organic" and choral,
a look at the organ in art, choral programs presented by our own Schola
Cantorum, and our chapter's pedals/pipes/pizza educational event for students,
which we've named I
POD
= I love Pipe Organ Discovery--and spear-headed by Jan Van Otterloo [see
article below].
Our season begins with rising star Chelsea Chen on Monday,
17 September 2007, 7:30 p.m., at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church,
Wornall & Meyer Blvd., KCMO. Chelsea Chen is the recipient of many
awards, most recently taking advantage of a 2006-2007 Fulbright Scholar
program to compose and perform in Taiwan. Ms. Chen is a Juilliard
graduate and she is currently in the Artist Diploma program at Yale, studying
with Thomas Murray.
Chelsea Chen's recital is underwritten by the Quimby Pipe Organ Company.
She will perform Sinfonietta by Ola Gjeilo, Prelude and Fugue in
A Minor, BWV 543 by J. S. Bach, Duruflé's Scherzo, Op. 2, Taiwan
Tableaux composed by the artist herself, Mendelssohn's Sonata in A Major,
Op. 65, No. 3, Vierne's Naiades and Reger's Chorale-Fantasy on 'Hallelujah!
Gott zu loben, bleibe meine Seelenfreud!' Come and hear this exciting
new artist!
N.B.: This season, our evening programs begin at 7:30
p.m. (30 minutes earlier than last year!)
Soli Deo Gloria,
Sharon L. Hettinger, Dean
And Supper begins before the recital at 6:15 p.m.
The menu consists of chicken parmagiana, scalloped potatoes, carrots and
sugar snap peas, tossed salad, rolls, and cream pie. To make your
reservation for dinner, please call Jean Lyne at 816.452.8222 by Wednesday,
12 September 2007. If she is not home, please leave your name, your

"Wind for the Pipe Organ: The Irksome Tasks of a Music
Teacher and the Judgment Rendered Thereon"
(Kansas City (Mo.) Star, 01 February 1898, page 8, column 3)
"N. Strong Gilbert keeps a pipe organ in his studio at 1013 Walnut street. Through the hot summer months of 1896 it was a hard matter to find a boy willing to pump it and he was forced at times to take his place behind the instrument and pump a little wind while his pupil worked the stops. The matter became irksome and it was with a feeling of delight that Mr. Gilbert found a second hand motor and bellows in Jenkins’s music store. He agreed to pay $71 for it and attached it to the organ. He paid $5 down, but that also became irksome and his debt stopped growing smaller. The matter was heatedly discussed before Justice Withrow yesterday afternoon and a jury quickly returned a judgment against the organist for $45.25."
[NOTE: Nathan Strong Gilbert was born in Iowa in January 1852. He moved
his family to Kansas City in 1890, where he resided for two years at 20
East 14th Street and then settled at 2448 Olive Street. From 1891 to 1893,
Gilbert was organist at Walnut Street Methodist Episcopal Church (South),
located on th east side of Walnut Street, between 8th and 9th Streets.
He then became organist at Troost Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church (South),
26th Street and Troost Avenue, when it was founded in 1893. N. Strong
Gilbert, as he preferred being called, left Kansas City in 1902 or 1903.
He later lived in Parkersburg, West Virginia.]
Thank you to the 151 members of our chapter who have sent in their registration
forms and dues for the 2007-2008 year as of August 22nd. This breaks down
to 62 Regular members, 51 Special (over 65, under 21, or disabled) members,
10 student members, 5 Partners, 8 Dual members and 15 Chapter Friends.
Our registrar Debbie Lynch informs us that students Devin Cline, Elisa Williams Bickers, and Chelsea Vaught have joined our chapter, in addition to new members Vicki Penny, David Weldy, Ray Smith, and Kevin Gunderson.
Many helpers are needed for our 26 January 2008 event, "Pipe Organ
Discovery." This name change from "Pedals, Pipes and Pizza"
was made at the suggestion of our Dean who came up with a great idea for
the logo on the T-shirts which will be given to each participant. The
logo will be designed by Rick Deasley and will include "I [picture
of heart] POD". We are hoping for a large turnout and have arranged
for venues at three churches (Faith Lutheran, St. Michael & All Angels,
and Southminster Presbyterian). We would like to have at least nine
Guild members at each venue to assist with registration, chaperoning,
and lunch. We will also need someone who can type mailing labels to the
piano teachers in the area (about 150 labels). If you are interested in
helping to make this event a success, please contact Jan Van Otterloo
at (816) 322-4942, or vanhumphreyloo@aol.com.
If you would like to be listed as an organ teacher in the information
which will be provided to participants, please also contact Jan.
In the summer of 2006, Park University completely modified the front of the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel, removing pews and other furnishings and raising the floor to the level of the chancel. To accomplish this work, it was necessary to remove the organ console that had served the chapel for many years.
By tremendous good fortune, Park University was able to secure a rather more modern console from Quimby Pipe Organ Company, one that is all electric and which is on a movable platform. The organ has been playable from that console since late September last year. Further, Quimby Pipe Organ Company moved some of the Diapason ranks, moved the Vox Humana from the non-playable Echo division to the Swell division, and restored the expression shades to the Great-Choir divisions. The organ plays better and sounds better.
To celebrate this accomplishment, Ken Cowan, brilliant young organ recitalist, will play a recital at the chapel on Sunday, 23 September 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Mr. Cowan is well known for his ability to play just about anything with consummate artistry. The recital is free admission. The chapel is located on Route 9, just east of downtown Parkville, across from the park and at the west edge of the campus. For further details, please contact Dr. Robert Pevitts at Park University, (816) 741- 2000.
The University of Kansas is excited to announce a conference entitled An Introduction to Organ Building: A Celebration of the First Ten Years of the Bales Organ Recital Hall, October 11-13, 2007. It is designed for church organ committees, organ students and potential organ builders. Talks will focus on individual parts of the organ and how they are built. Conference leaders include organ builders John Boody, John Brombaugh, Dan Jaeckel, James Louder, Steve Scannell, and acoustician Robert F. Mahoney Jr., In addition there will be a talk by Michael Bauer of the KU faculty, an organ recital by Kimberly Marshall from Arizona State University, a carillon recital by Elizabeth Berghout from KU, and a choral concert by the Kansas City Chorale. For further information see www2.ku.edu/~organ or call 785-864-2797.
The third CARLENE NEIHART INTERNATIONAL PIPE ORGAN COMPETITION will take

place is for $1000. Please see the web site organcompetitions.com
for the rules, application, and more information about the competition.
Donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Donors could request
that the award contain, subject to approval of the Competition Board
