NOVEMBER 2007

From the Dean:
SIMPLY ORGANIC! OR NOT!

Dear Colleagues:

Our October meeting featured local maestro Charles Bruffy, who was able to pull quite a lot of choral music from your local AGO chapter members! Charles, in his inimitable way, worked adeptly with our voices–showing his way of approaching a piece of choral music.... “It’s all elemental” was a comment we heard through the course of the evening. “Let your singers ‘own’ the music” and “Listen” were also heard more than once. It’s nice to have such a collegial colleague in town!

Bring Your Own Buddy is our theme for our November recital, and it stars organists from our chapter who will perform with their buddies! On deck are the following organists and their colleagues:

Mark Langdon, organist, with David Cunnningham, flugelhorn and trumpet
Ann Marie Rigler, organist, with Eric Williams, violin, and
Suzanne Hatcher, soprano
Lynn Alfers, organist, with Brian Steele, baritone
Terry Foster, organist, with Brett Terry, organist
Reggie Watkins, organist, with Preston Moore, baritone
Barry Wenger, organist, with Emily Penick, soprano

Our November meeting is held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Monday, 19 November 2007. The church is located at 13th and Charlotte in KC, MO. You may want to carpool to dinner and/or the recital, as there is an event at the nearby Sprint Center.

Please remember to advertise in your church newsletters and bulletins. Our publicity chair David Diebold does a great job putting out the word into the community, but YOU make a big difference by letting your parish know about our events!

N.B.: This season, our evening programs begin at 7:30 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than last year!)

Soli Deo Gloria,
Sharon L. Hettinger, Dean

THE MENU for NOVEMBER'S DINNER
Dinner begins before the recital at 6:15 p.m. The menu consists of turkey with stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry salad, rolls, and pecan AND pumpkin pie. A veritable FEAST! To make your reservation for dinner, please call Jean Lyne at 816.452.8222 by Wednesday, 14 November 2007. If she is not home, please leave your name, your telephone number, and the number of reservations you desire. The meal cost is $8.00. Reservations are required.

A GLANCE AT OUR PAST
~ James Tharp, Chapter Historian

“Christmas Services” (Kansas City (Mo.) Times, 24 December 1889, page 8)

“At the Christmas services at St. John’s Roman Catholic church on Independence avenue mass will be sung at 5 o’clock and at 10:30 o’clock solemn high mass will be sung. The choir will render Eduardo Marzo’s “Messe Sole[m]nelle,” at the offertory the “Adeste Fidelio,” arranged by J. V. Novello, will be sung. The choir consists of the following singers: Sopranos, Misses Janie Harwood, Etta Maloney and Lavinia Winchester; altos, Misses Blanche McDonald and Lavinia Harwood; tenors, Messrs. George Meuehlebach and A. J. O’Neil; bassos, Messrs. J. W. Perry and J. Welkspein; organist, Mrs. Teresa Lawlor.”

[NOTE: The Church of Saint John the Baptist (Roman Catholic), was a predominantly Irish parish founded in 1882 on the north side of Independence Avenue, west of Highland Avenue. Even during its early years, this church was said to have one of the best choirs in the city and its music program in general was highly regarded. Saint John’s was also the first Roman Catholic parish in Kansas City to acquire a pipe organ. Mrs. Teresa (Galvis) Lawlor, organist at Saint John’s Church from 1889 to 1891, was born in Auburn, New York, in 1861. From 1891 to 1894, she was organist of Saint Patrick’s Church (Roman Catholic). In January 1895, Mrs. Lawlor married Robert R. Keith, a prominent Kansas City businessman and founder of a furniture company. She died in August 1939.]

OUR JANUARY 26, 2008 MEETING:
PIPE ORGAN DISCOVERY ~Jan Van Otterloo

Our PIPE ORGAN DISCOVERY is well underway, with mailings begun, and publicity chair David Diebold hard at work; it’s a huge undertaking, and we are most thankful to Jan Van Otterloo for serving as ‘point person’ for this programming event for our chapter. This IS our January meeting and many people are needed to make this a successful event. Are you someone who prefers to work behind the scenes or out front? Hospitality? Are you someone who likes working with children, young teens, or older teens? Whatever YOUR talents are, we need YOU!

Thanks to those who have already volunteered to assist with our January event, Pipe Organ Discovery. More helpers are needed to assist with registration, chaperoning and lunch on January 26. If you will help (even if you don’t have a specific job in mind!), please contact Jan Van Otterloo at 816-322-4942 or vanhumphreyloo@aol.com. We are planning for a LARGE turnout of youth, from grades 2-12.  Please encourage YOUR students, your choristers, and their parents to visit our website www.kcago.com, where there is a “tab” to click on, taking them directly to an on-line registration form. If they prefer to register over the phone, see Jan’s phone number listed above.

LONG-RANGE PLANNING UPDATE

The report from Long-Range Planning to the Executive Board (Oct. 2007) includes reviewing/updating the INFO-PAK material with Professional Concerns chair, Karen Engebretson and her committee, determining how best to add organ listings to our website, considering a POE+ (for adults) and/or taking AGO on the road to rural communities for a similiar opportunity, promoting Guild hospitality, reviewing the dean’s term, and providing guidelines for the programming committee.

QUIMBY STUDENT COMPETITION 2009 ~Ann Posey

We can only have competitors for this competition if we have students! The next competition will be in 2009 so NOW is the time to be recruiting and teaching students for this competition. The repertoire for the competition should be a part of the students' lesson on a regular basis: a prelude and fugue by Bach, a piece by a composer born 1800-1880, a work composed after 1930, and hymns. Our first challenge is recruiting students. Our church invites young pianists to play Christmas carol arrangements as gathering music for our family Christmas Eve service. This gives us an opportunity to hear those who are doing especially well with piano and who might be interested in playing the organ. We have one or two other times during the year when they are also invited to play gathering music. During the last couple of summers, we have offered an "organ camp" and invited those interested to participate. This camp is for two hours a day for four days.

The Sunday following, the students are invited to play a piece they have learned during the week. You may have other ideas for recruiting organ students - please share them. The Quimby competition is open to students up to 23 years of age. This means that high school students may be competing with college students or recent graduates. If the younger student performs well he/she has the possibility of winning. There is also the opportunity to hear other young people play literature they may want to play later. We need to keep our ears open to young musicians in our churches and in our studios who are potential organists. We also need to plan ahead for our students to be well prepared for this competition.

CONGRATULATIONS & KUDOS TO...

Chapter members Mary Davis & Sarah Jacobs, who earned their CAGO certification. Helen Frances Swartz for an incredible 60 years of music ministry on the bench! Ian McIntosh and his helping hands, for compiling and producing our 2007-2008 directory. Dale Rider, whose original composition was selected for inclusion in the 2007 Peace Colloquy, held at Community of Christ, in October. Over 80 submissions were received, and criteria were based on clarity of texts –justice and peace themes--and congregational sing-ability, among other requirements.

OUR DEEP CONDOLENCES

to sub-dean Bill McCandless and his wife, Marcille, on the loss of her mother.

THE AGO Executive Committee

would like to compile a list of members who are interested in finance. There are two or three committees that may require your expertise. Please contact Dean Sharon Hettinger at dean@kcago.com or call 785.842.2053.
