Dear Colleagues:
Our November meeting featured the talents of many Guild members and
their friends! Thanks to Ann Marie Rigler, Eric Williams, Suzanne Hatcher,
Terry Foster, Brett Terry, Barry Wenger, Emily Penick, Mark Langdon, David
Cunningham, Reggie Watkins, and Preston Moore. Lynn Alfers was very ill
and unable to participate with her buddy, Brian Steele. Thank you to Terry
Foster and St. Mary's Episcopal Church for graciously hosting us, and
to Bill McCandless, sub-dean, for running the meeting, and to Mark Langdon,
for presenting the introductory remarks at the recital. A big thank you,
also, to the Bells of Peace for providing gathering music on the carillon.
I understand it was a lovely treat.
December always brings MANY musical blessings and opportunities to enjoy our colleagues' work and presentations. I know you will want to attend many of the concerts, recitals, liturgies, and services listed below, but TWO very important and special events include the Greater Kansas City AGO's Schola Cantorum. They will present Lessons & Carols twice, and hopefully you'll be able to make one or both of their presentations. The first is 2 December 2007, 5 p.m., St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 18th & Washington, in Kansas City, KS; the second is 9 December 2007, 4 p.m., St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 40th & Main, in Kansas City, MO.
Soli Deo Gloria,
Sharon L. Hettinger, Dean
This IS our January meeting and many people are needed to make this a successful event. If you haven't yet volunteered, pick up the phone and call Jan Van Otterloo at 816-322-4942 or email her at vanhumphreyloo@aol.com... Thanks to you who have already volunteered to assist with our January event, Pipe Organ Discovery. Helpers are needed to assist with registration, chaperoning and lunch on January 26. We are planning for a LARGE turnout of youth, from grades 2-12.
Here's a 'blurb' to include in your church's JANUARY NEWSLETTER, your church's EDUCATION DIRECTOR's NEWSLETTER, your church's MUSIC NEWSLETTER, your SCHOOL'S NEWSLETTER or LETTER TO PARENTS...Or any place you can get out the word! (Flyers available to download HERE)
THIS I*POD is "I LOVE PIPE ORGAN DISCOVERY"...and it's an opportunity
for students in grades 2-12 to learn about the pipe organ. Students will
be grouped by age and have the opportunity to learn about the organ, how
they're made, how to make different sounds on the instrument, and even
try it out in a 'hands-on' time. The event is FREE
and will conclude with a Pizza lunch. A gift will be presented to each
participant by local organ firms.
The IPOD will take place at local KC churches. To sign-up, click HERE
for our on-line registration form. If you prefer to register over the
phone or have questions, please contact Jan Van Otterloo, 816.322.4942,
or email her at vanhumphreyloo@aol.com.

PIPE ORGAN ENCOUNTERS introduce young people to the pipe organ through instruction in organ playing, repertoire, history, design, and construction. These regional summer organ music institutes for teenage students provide private and group instruction in service playing and solo repertoire, opportunities to learn about the musical heritage of various religious denominations, and a chance for young musicians to meet others with similar interests. Basic keyboard proficiency is required, although previous organ study is not necessary. The POE (Advanced) is designed for teenagers who have already attended a POE, or who are already receiving private instruction. Scholarship assistance is available. The POE+ is a summer program filled with practical information and instruction for adult pianists and other musicians interested in improving their service-playing skills. Participants will be introduced to basic organ skills through private instruction and classes. The week-long experience will lead to greater confidence and competence at the organ. POE and POE+ site locations are selected by the AGO Committee on the New Organist and approved by the AGO National Council after application by AGO host chapters. The deadline for applications to host 2009 POE and POE+ programs is March 15, 2008. Applications are available from AGO National Headquarters. Partial program funding is provided to AGO host chapters.
***Our Greater Kansas City Chapter of the AGO is considering a POE for 2009.***
